Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum tissues that support your teeth.  This infection begins as gingivitis which results in red, swollen, tender, bleeding gums.  If left untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis.  Periodontitis causes chronic inflammation in the gum tissue that results in destruction of the supporting gum and bone, bad breath, and eventual tooth loss.  Many times this disease progresses without any pain.

The disease is a direct result of the bacteria in the bio-film or "plaque" that accumulates on our teeth.  Other risk factors include: smoking, hormonal changes, diabetes and other illnesses, medications, and genetic susceptiblity.

Interestingly,  periodontal disease has been linked with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, complications with osteoporosis, and pre-term and low birth weight babies.

Systemic Health Risks Associated with Periodontal Disease

This is why we educate our patients' on the importance of maintaining oral health.  We recommend dental cleanings at least every 6 months to prevent the onset of periodontal disease and have more aggressive treatments available after periodontal disease is present.
